Following the reveal of "Supergirl's" opening weekend numbers last week, the alarm bells have officially sounded for a significant financial loss for DC Studios. Produced on a budget of approximately $180 million, the film managed to pull in only about $68 million globally in its debut. With box office figures typically seeing a steep decline in subsequent weeks, it's virtually certain that "Supergirl" will not achieve profitability during its theatrical run, making it impossible to even break even. This morning, industry trades Variety and The Wrap followed up with reports analyzing just how much money the film is expected to lose.

Variety estimates that "Supergirl" could lose a staggering $100 million to $120 million. According to their sources, the film's total cost balloons to $290 million when marketing expenses are included. The outlet projects a final domestic total of just $100 million, with a global haul between $200 million and $210 million. Typically, a film of this scale needs to gross at least $375 million to recoup its costs. However, other industry insiders point out that the break-even point for "Supergirl" is actually lower because none of the actors signed contracts with back-end box office bonuses. This means more of the revenue goes directly to the studio, potentially reducing the loss to a range of $80 million to $85 million.

Sources from The Wrap provided a similar break-even threshold, estimating it to be around $315 million. They also concur that the final loss will likely land right around the $85 million mark.
