PlayStation Goes All-Digital: Sony to Halt Physical Disc Production by 2028

Following the recent discussions sparked by "Grand Theft Auto VI" confirming its physical boxed version would no longer include a game disc, instead opting for an in-box download code, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has now announced it will cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation console games starting January 2028.

The company stated that as consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift from physical discs to digital formats, all new games released for PlayStation consoles will stop physical disc production from January 2028. After this date, new titles will be sold exclusively in digital form via the PlayStation Store and through retail channels. However, this transition will not impact previously released titles or games still slated for physical release before January 2028.

Sony also emphasized, "For Sony Interactive Entertainment, this is a natural progression in line with consumer trends, as the public's preference for digital media has significantly surpassed physical discs. This shift will bring us closer to how the majority of today's player community acquires and plays games."

"We will continue to prioritize resources to drive innovation in how players access games and provide choices across their preferred purchase channels, whether through retailers or the PlayStation Store for new titles. We remain committed to delivering world-class gaming experiences to players and appreciate your continued support," the company further added.

This policy signifies that new PlayStation titles will officially enter a disc-free era. In the future, even purchases made through physical retail channels will likely resemble digital product keys or download codes. For players accustomed to collecting physical copies, reselling games, or lending them, this is undoubtedly set to become the next major point of contention.
