This past March, Warner Bros. Pictures announced development on "Shadows of the Past," a new installment in "The Lord of the Rings" saga. The concept originated from acclaimed talk show host Stephen Colbert and his screenwriter son, Peter McGee, who are set to pen the script. A director for the project has not yet been announced.

What surprised fans most was the film's title, which is derived from the second chapter of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" novel. The story will adapt the first six chapters of the book, which were never brought to the screen. According to the official synopsis, the film is set 14 years after Frodo's death, following Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace their original journey. Meanwhile, Sam's daughter, Eleanor, uncovers a long-buried secret and is determined to reveal why the War of the Ring nearly failed before it even began.

The most perplexing detail for fans is the premise of Frodo's demise. Some believe he genuinely dies, while others interpret it as a metaphorical description of his departure from Middle-earth to Valinor. Warner Bros. has yet to offer a clear explanation. What is certain, however, is that if Elijah Wood, who portrays Frodo, returns, his screen time will be limited. Wood recently shared his perspective on the project.

Wood told The Direct in a recent interview that casting was not yet underway. He noted that the six chapters from "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" novel, which Stephen Colbert intends to adapt, were originally omitted from the film because they would have slowed the pace of Frodo's journey from Bag End and the Shire to Bree, disrupting the story's rhythm.

Wood added that Colbert's vision for the fourth installment plans to include "all the characters" from the novel, suggesting Wood "would logically return" as Frodo. However, if Frodo is indeed "killed off" early in the story, his role would likely be limited to flashbacks.

Wood concluded by saying that the idea of telling these six chapters was exciting for fans. He expressed confidence in Stephen and his son's creative vision, believing it to be rich and interesting, and that it would include all characters. He acknowledged that the script still needed to be written, reviewed, and approved by the studio, but theoretically, he expected to return. Wood was particularly enthusiastic about Stephen and his son, whom he considered authoritative Tolkien scholars, handling the project.
