It's been a long road back to the big screen for Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" franchise, with the upcoming live-action film marking its first theatrical appearance in 39 years since the 1987 original. This second cinematic outing wasn't a quick project; it's the result of a years-long development process that saw the property pass through multiple directors and studios. Because of this lengthy and winding journey, a trove of concept art from different abandoned versions has been left behind.

Concept artist Constantine Sekeris, who has been involved with the "Masters of the Universe" project for years, recently shared several pieces of concept art on his Instagram from his collaborations with various directors. The featured image, for example, was created in 2018 for a version helmed by "Man of Steel" screenwriter David S. Goyer. Goyer was attached to write and was also set to direct before he departed to work on the "Foundation" series. Judging by the character designs, Goyer's vision for the film was significantly more sinister.
The two images of Skeletor below were designed by Sekeris for "The Lost City" directors Adam and Aaron Nee, showcasing a take that is also distinct from what was eventually developed.
