Throughout the 40-plus-year history of the Transformers franchise, the Dinobots have always held a special place. They combine two things every kid loves—dinosaurs and robots—and their massive, intimidating presence has been a staple from the original G1 cartoon to the live-action films. In the fourth installment of the movie franchise, 2014's "Transformers: Age of Extinction" (hereafter referred to as AOE), the arrival of the Dinobots injected a powerful new force into the Autobot ranks, thrilling longtime fans.
In the AOE storyline, the Dinobots, a group of Legendary Knights, were held captive as trophies aboard Lockdown's ship. After being freed by Optimus Prime, their leader Grimlock challenged him for dominance. Upon his defeat, Grimlock acknowledged Prime's leadership and joined forces with him. During the massive battle in Hong Kong, he became a formidable ally for the Autobots, helping to fend off Lockdown, Galvatron, and their forces with a ferocious, wild fighting style that left a lasting impression.
Unlike the previous AOE Grimlock released in 2018, this all-new Studio Series Titan Class version more accurately captures his massive on-screen scale. In addition to his classic robotic T-Rex and robot modes, he is designed to be paired with last year's AOE Optimus Prime figure, creating the ultimate dragon-rider duo in perfect proportion. This is an absolute can't-miss masterpiece for any Dinobot fan. Let's not waste any more time and dive right into today's unboxing!
▼As expected from a Titan Class figure, the sheer presence of this box is massive and wild!

▼The front features a ferocious portrait of his T-Rex mode.

▼The back showcases both of the toy's modes and reveals a 59-step transformation process, building anticipation before you even open it!

▼The side is printed with CG art of the robot mode.

▼The top preserves the classic scene from the film where he prepares to challenge Optimus Prime. The memories are flooding back!

▼After removing the inner tray, be sure to consult the included instruction manual to attach the separately packed parts to the main body and adjust all the small mechanisms...

▼The Legendary Knight, I, Grimlock, have arrived!!

▼This is an entirely new mold. Beyond its larger size, the detailing is much closer to the film's production design, and it faithfully recreates the massive mace that was absent from the previous version.

▼The exquisite sculpted detail all over his body makes him look like he stepped right off the screen. It's incredible!

▼The head sculpt is not only incredibly three-dimensional but also features a printed bronze weathering effect for that battle-worn texture.

▼Although, the head design does bring to mind other iconic mecha like Evangelion or The Guyver.

▼It's a joy to admire from every angle.

▼The chest and abdomen feature high-density mechanical detail.

▼The dragon heads on his shoulders are worth taking the time to appreciate up close.

▼The large-scale weathered paint application on the skirt armor is another key highlight.

▼To accommodate the transformation, the skirt armor is on a single-axis hinge, allowing it to open up and create space for outward and forward thigh movement.

▼The hands also feature a single-axis hinge, allowing the palms to open and close freely for holding his weapon.
▼His signature spiked mace is included. It's made of a soft plastic for safety.

▼The mace can be separated into top and bottom halves, revealing his original hand.

▼Both the war hammer and the mace can be stored on Grimlock's back in robot mode.

▼The feet feature ankle pivot joints for stability, and many of the lower body joints have built-in ratchets to maintain poses. For a figure this large, that's a huge plus!

▼In addition to the pivot, the ankles also have a slight forward tilt.

▼Covered in detail from head to toe, the design on this figure is truly spectacular.

▼"Me, Grimlock, am the coolest!!"

▼Just because he's Titan Class doesn't mean he can't be posed. With a little creative use of his joints, you can still pull off some awesome action stances!

▼Let's bring out our Studio Series Voyager Class Knight Optimus Prime to really appreciate the staggering height difference!

▼Now that we've seen the robot mode, let's check out the T-Rex mode!

▼From the latter half of AOE into the next film, Grimlock primarily appeared in his T-Rex form, which is a nice homage to the original G1 cartoon where he also spent most of his time in dino mode.

▼In his dinosaur form, the sculpt emphasizes sharp angles and a spiky aesthetic, a feeling that the toy captures perfectly. We also have to mention that the tail, formed from his war hammer, is shockingly long—another highlight that the old version simply can't compete with.

▼The jaw can open and close, but the hinge is on the upper jaw, while the lower jaw is fixed.

▼There's a port inside the mouth for attaching effect parts to recreate his fire-breathing attack (the photo example uses the flame effect from the Voyager Class Megatron from the fifth movie).

▼The T-Rex's tiny arms are surprisingly articulated with three joints for dynamic movement.

▼The dino legs also feature a weathered paint job, distinct from the bronze color of the outer armor.

▼Quick tip: when posing, you can un-tab the hip joints to give the thighs a wider range of angles for more dynamic displays.

▼Try to capture all of Grimlock's most ferocious moments!

▼Bringing Optimus Prime back in, just look at that scale! This is the perfect proportion we've been waiting for!

▼The back of the neck also features a dedicated seat and tabs for Optimus Prime, making it easy to perfectly recreate the powerful T-Rex rider team-up!

▼"Dino-Riders, roll out!!" With a combo this perfect, how can you possibly pass it up?

This Studio Series Titan Class Grimlock addresses many of the shortcomings of the previous version. With a complete weapon loadout and a much more screen-accurate scale, he's an incredibly compelling figure. For Transformers fans who love the movie version of Grimlock, this is one you absolutely cannot miss! We'll see you at the next unboxing!
