It's hard to believe that before we even get to next year's "Godzilla: Supernova" release, we've suddenly received the news that Sam Neill, who accompanied so many of our childhood memories, has passed away. I vividly recall the summer of 2022, when the main cast of "Jurassic Park" reunited on the big screen after nearly 30 years. The emotion of that moment, while somewhat diluted by the film's subsequent plot, was incredibly precious. It was likely the last time this series would offer the world such a brilliant, amber-like glow.
My understanding of veteran actor Sam Neill was actually quite limited. Beyond his terrifying, disfigured appearance at the end of the cult classic "Event Horizon" – which he co-starred in with Laurence Fishburne before he became Morpheus in "The Matrix" – I knew him best as Dr. Alan Grant from "Jurassic Park." He was the paleontologist who disliked children but possessed a pure, childlike heart: from his trembling awe at first seeing a Brachiosaurus, to his courageous self-sacrifice protecting the kids from a Tyrannosaurus Rex and Velociraptor chase. Even in the third film, facing conflicts of lies and students compromising academic ethics for profit, Sam Neill, through a subtle smile in his portrayal of the character, shone like warm sunlight into the hearts of every audience member. His impact remained unforgettable until the very end of his life.
