Japan's renowned prize figure and collectible manufacturer Furyu, through its high-quality character brand F:NEX, has announced the upcoming release of its latest product from "Evangelion New Theatrical Edition": the "Rei Ayanami -Japanese Doll- 1/4 Scale Figure." This item is slated for a July 2027 release and will be sold exclusively via a made-to-order production system.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the "Evangelion" series, F:NEX's 20th collaborative figure with Yoshitoku will feature the highly popular heroine, Rei Ayanami. Located in Tokyo's Asakusa, Yoshitoku is a venerable Japanese doll manufacturer with a 300-year history. They specialize in crafting Hina dolls for Girls' Day, Musha dolls (Gogatsu Ningyo) for Children's Day, and various other traditional Japanese cultural dolls. In recent years, Yoshitoku has actively partnered with popular modern films, anime, and manga to produce figures, integrating their centuries-old techniques into these contemporary characters. Their corporate slogan, "The face is the life of a doll (人形は顔がいのち)," reflects their meticulous attention to detail, not only in producing high-quality kimonos or armor but also in imbuing the dolls' faces with soul and expression.
The "Rei Ayanami -Japanese Doll- 1/4 Scale Figure" stands at an impressive 44.5 cm tall, showcasing a beautiful design that blends classical Japanese aesthetics. It meticulously captures Rei Ayanami's serene, gentle smile, the intricate skeletal structure, and the ornate patterns of her paper umbrella. Special attention has been given to the sculpting of all ten fingers, elegantly portraying a traditional Japanese dance-inspired pose as she holds the umbrella.
A major highlight of the figure is its elaborate kimono, sculpted by renowned Japanese doll artist AYUMI Uyama. The fabric itself was crafted with the assistance of Kyoto's long-established textile merchant, Nishimura Shoji Shoten. It features a luxurious two-piece design, based on the blue and silver hues of the "Evangelion" plugsuit, accented with red and salmon colors. Ornate patterns of cherry blossoms, chrysanthemums, and crane feathers further enhance its splendor. The obi (sash) is made from "Kinran" brocade, produced by MORISAN, a century-old Nishijin-ori specialist in Kyoto. Its unique hexagonal pattern is not only an ancient auspicious motif derived from turtle shells but also subtly references the frequently appearing "A.T. Field" from the series.
