The second film in the DCU, "Supergirl," has officially concluded its global theatrical run, grossing only $125.8 million. This figure not only trails "Morbius" ($167 million) and "Joker: Folie à Deux" but also marks the lowest box office performance for a DC film in over two decades, since 2004's "Catwoman."
The film struggled from its opening, debuting with just $37.1 million in North America and a global opening weekend slightly above $62 million. Its box office then saw significant weekly declines. The total revenue for its entire theatrical run was even comparable to last year's "Superman" opening weekend. In stark contrast, "Superman" ultimately soared past $618 million worldwide, highlighting a significant disparity between the two films.
With a production budget of approximately $170 million, plus tens of millions in marketing costs, "Supergirl" is confirmed to have resulted in a financial loss for DC Studios.
Although the film garnered a 56% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this was still significantly higher than "Morbius'" 15%. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran previously admitted that the opening performance was disappointing, but the team remains confident in their overall strategy.
