According to a recent report from The Playlist, the spin-off, which had the working title "Heckler," was planned for production in the United Kingdom. The project was initially greenlit during the peak popularity of the original Korean series. However, sources indicate that Netflix's executive leadership has since undergone changes, leading to a shift in strategic direction. As a result, the streamer's focus on the spin-off gradually diminished, ultimately leading to the decision to cease its development.
Netflix reportedly aimed to expand the "Squid Game" brand with the US spin-off as its core. However, the company now prefers to commission localized remakes tailored to individual international markets, such as French-language or Norwegian versions, or to produce derivative series set in specific countries. Other sources, however, suggest these are currently just speculative, with no country-specific remakes or spin-offs actively in development.
