The 2012 independent film "Spring Breakers," which depicted four college students on spring break falling into a life of crime after an impulsive robbery, received critical acclaim upon its release, with many outlets naming it one of the top ten films of the year. Its unexpectedly strong box office performance led producers to attempt a sequel. However, neither a follow-up film nor a TV series adaptation ever materialized, and original director Harmony Korine, who was initially slated to return, eventually exited the project.
Last year, however, a new sequel project was greenlit, titled "Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain." This iteration saw Matthew Bright, director of "Tiptoes," take the helm. The cast was also revamped, featuring former Disney Channel stars Bella Thorne and Ariel Martin, alongside Grace Van Dien (who appeared in "Stranger Things" Season 4) and Forest Whitaker's daughter, True Whitaker. Original cast members like Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens were confirmed not to return.

Nearly a year later, Thorne, one of the sequel's leads, recently revealed a significant change during an interview on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast: Bright has stepped down as director, with Thorne now taking over both directing and screenwriting duties. While primarily known as an actress and singer, Thorne has directed numerous music videos and short films in recent years and is currently in post-production on her feature directorial debut, "Color Your Hurt." Thorne stated that the producers of "Spring Breakers 2" entrusted her with the writing and directing roles after seeing an early cut of "Color Your Hurt."
Thorne also teased that the sequel's style will differ significantly from the original. She noted that the first film emerged during a period when women in the entertainment industry were still largely exploited, whereas the second installment will embrace a "completely wild liberation," promising more energy and a non-stop thrill ride from beginning to end.
