Though now closely associated with the DC brand as the President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics, Jim Lee’s early work at Marvel Comics profoundly defined the visual style of superhero comics in the 1990s. Now, Marvel is partnering with Pan Universal Galactic Worldwide to launch a new art book, "Marvel Artist Archive: Jim Lee," collecting his classic original art from his time at the publisher.
The book, currently funding on Kickstarter, focuses on Lee's original drawings from his work on titles like "Uncanny X-Men," "X-Men," and "The Punisher." This period not only saw him become one of the comic industry's most acclaimed new stars but also preserved the bold lines, muscular tension, and dynamic compositions he brought to the mutant titles.
"Marvel Artist Archive: Jim Lee" will be released as a 9 x 12-inch hardcover with a slipcase, featuring hundreds of pages of original art. It will also be accompanied by two 11 x 17-inch portfolio sets, reprinting double-page spreads and covers at their original size. Backers can also add on mini-print reproductions of comic covers, housed in a scaled-down model of a short comic box.
PUGW CEO John Nee stated, "Jim Lee's work at Marvel didn't just define an era; it helped reshape what superhero comics could look and feel like. With 'Marvel Artist Archive: Jim Lee,' we wanted to create something worthy of that legacy: a high-end, collector-first line that honors the power, detail, energy, and lasting impact of Jim's art."
PUGW also announced that this volume is the first in a series of retrospective art books, with more projects to be revealed in the future.
