Despite a hefty $250 million production budget, Disney's live-action "Moana" has struggled to find its footing at the box office and with critics. After a month in theaters, the film has barely crossed $260 million globally, meaning its theatrical revenue alone won't cover production costs after the standard split with exhibitors. Critically, the movie has been widely panned as a "soulless" and "empty" remake, with many reviewers also criticizing its "rough" and unpolished special effects.

Addressing the lukewarm reception, star Dwayne Johnson finally spoke out in an interview with People magazine. "The first two reviews that came out, I’ll never forget, they were so high," Johnson recalled. "And then the tide turned (laughs), but sometimes that’s just how it is. That’s this business, you can’t do anything about it. My wife and I often talk about these things at home, late at night after the kids are asleep, at the kitchen counter. The most challenging part is that we have to see the meaning beyond the opening weekend box office results. We have to remember what’s happening now and all the voices out there. If you like it, that’s great; if you don’t like it, that’s okay. What’s truly important is that the cultural elements are fully represented, because my children and I can now finally see our people—referring to their Polynesian heritage—on the big screen and say, ‘This is the first time our faces have appeared on the big screen, that’s so cool!’”
