Alexandre Aja, director of "Piranha 3D," helmed the 2019 alligator disaster film "Crawl," which became both a critical and commercial success. Produced for under $15 million, the film grossed nearly $100 million worldwide and earned widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Its enthusiastic reception prompted Paramount Players to task Aja with developing a sequel story the same year it was released. However, it took seven years for casting to finally be locked in.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed today that "Crawl 2" is slated to begin principal photography in Hungary later this month, with Aja returning to direct. Mason Gooding, son of Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Emily Rudd, who gained prominence as Nami in Netflix's live-action "One Piece" series, are confirmed to star. The sequel is reportedly set in New York, where a hurricane unleashes a new threat as alligators infiltrate the city streets.
