The "The Princess Diaries" franchise, Anne Hathaway's breakout hit, has had a third installment in development for four years, but production has yet to begin. This delay appears linked to the unsuccessful attempts to persuade Julie Andrews to reprise her role as Mia's grandmother. Andrews recently confirmed in a new interview with InStyle magazine that she has repeatedly declined to return.

Andrews explained to InStyle, "I think I'm going to have to pass on that one. I'm pretty much retired, and that's probably the most accurate description. They've been asking me for the whole of last year if I would be interested, and it's very difficult to say no, but I did. I've had a wonderful time, and I think the film can be very successful without me returning to play the grandmother at this age." It's clear Andrews is resolute in her decision not to return.
Strictly speaking, Andrews isn't entirely retired, but in recent years, she has indeed stepped away from on-screen roles, only occasionally taking on select voice work. Andrews clarified that she does this "just to keep the brain agile," aiming to prevent cognitive decline.
