The new version of The X-Files being developed by Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coogler has widely been assumed to be a hard reboot—one that would start over completely in a separate continuity. That may not be the case after all. During a recent interview with Polygon, original series creator Chris Carter suggested that Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, the two stars of the original show, could appear in Coogler’s series.

“At least Gillian, I think, will appear in Coogler’s version. I assume David will too, so Mulder and Scully should be there,” Carter said. Their involvement has not been officially confirmed, however, and Carter’s wording suggests that he was offering his own expectation rather than announcing a finalized deal. If Anderson and Duchovny do return, Coogler’s series would appear to be a soft reboot that preserves the continuity of the original while introducing a new generation of leads. Carter also said that he remains eager to continue The X-Files himself, whether through another revival, a fresh reboot or a new feature film. Although he has yet to decide whether his ideas would be better suited to television or cinema, he teased that he has several ambitious plans in mind.
