"Ratatouille" Director Brad Bird Shot Down Sequel, But Pixar Isn't Giving Up: CCO Pete Docter Teases "More Possibilities"

Last June, acclaimed entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider reported that Pixar was secretly developing a sequel to "Ratatouille." This past June, "Ratatouille" director and co-writer Brad Bird confirmed that Pixar had indeed considered a follow-up, but he quickly rejected the idea, unwilling to retell a largely similar story. However, Bird's refusal only indicates his personal unwillingness to return as director, not that Pixar won't seek out another filmmaker to take the helm.

Pixar's current Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, recently attended Disney's D23 Expo. While acknowledging the challenges of creating a "Ratatouille" sequel, he did not entirely dismiss the possibility. Docter explained that "you never say never," and that the studio is "always exploring how to better utilize these characters." He elaborated that characters typically undergo a growth arc, changing and becoming their best selves, which then raises the question of "where do you go from there?" He noted that if a character has already reached that stage, it becomes challenging to find new narrative paths, and he believes this is the primary hurdle for a "Ratatouille" sequel.
