The global box office staged a family showdown last weekend as Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway, who play son and mother in The Odyssey, competed with separate starring vehicles. Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day entered its third weekend and, as widely expected, officially crossed $2 billion worldwide. It reached the milestone in just 17 days, making it the second-fastest film in history to do so, behind only Avengers: Endgame, which needed 11 days.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now earned approximately $785.8 million in North America and $1.24 billion internationally, bringing its worldwide total to roughly $2.02 billion. It has officially surpassed the $1.92 billion earned by Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise. The sequel also remained No. 1 at the North American box office for a third consecutive weekend after adding another $70 million.

Meanwhile, Hathaway’s The End of Oak Street debuted in third place in North America with approximately $21 million. The dinosaur thriller added another $26 million from international markets for a worldwide opening of nearly $47 million. With a reported production budget of $80 million before marketing and an estimated break-even point of around $200 million, the opening is not especially encouraging. Distributor Warner Bros. Pictures will now be counting on strong word of mouth and relatively modest declines in the weeks ahead.
