Robert Downey Jr. is not only one of the few actors to portray multiple characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also one of the rare few to play both a hero and a villain in the franchise. Once a founding member of the Avengers as "Iron Man" Tony Stark, he has now reportedly returned in a new identity as "Doctor Doom" Victor Von Doom, invading various Marvel multiverses. Naturally, many might wonder: does Downey prefer playing the villain or the hero?

During a recent appearance at the D23 Expo, Downey was asked in an interview with "Good Morning America" whether he preferred portraying Iron Man or Doctor Doom. Without hesitation, he gave a clear answer.

Downey stated: "It feels really strange to be the bad guy. Everyone else is so good, all these righteous heroes, and I'm just there, masked and hooded, being all spooky. I kept thinking, 'They're all on the other side of the camera, and I bet they're all mad at me.' But what I will say is, it allowed me to get to know Hayley Atwell better, and it deepened my years-long friendship with Chris Evans, because he's just such a genuine person. You can't just agree to come back casually; everything has to be in place. I think the development of this important relationship [in the hypothetical 'Doomsday' scenario] is fantastic, unexpected, and beautiful. For now, I'd lean towards Doctor Doom, because I finally get a chance to observe what I've been missing all this time — how others react to the villain."
