Japanese toy company Sentinel (株式会社千値練) is once again teaming up with renowned Japanese illustrator NakaoTeppei (ナカオテッペイ) to release the highly anticipated fifth installment of their popular "Sushi Monster" series: the "Sushi Monster SUSHI-L.A. Real Sushi Size Figure Collection 5: Happy Smile & Deep Sadness"! This collection features 8 standard figures plus 2 secret variants and is slated for a January 2027 release.
The lore of SUSHI-L.A. begins in a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles. While preparing an "extra-large sushi with a super-sized dollop of wasabi," the sushi mutated due to the overwhelming spiciness, giving birth to the "Sushi Monster SUSHI-L.A." (スシエルエー), complete with eyes, arms, and legs. As these creatures walk, individual grains of rice fall from their bodies. After just 100 steps, their legs disappear entirely, and upon death, they revert to being just a regular, oversized sushi.
The sushi toppings covering their heads and backs are removable, and different toppings can alter SUSHI-L.A.'s personality. If regular sushi gets touched by their weapon, "Wasabi Liquid," it gains new life and transforms into a Sushi Monster itself. However, if a SUSHI-L.A. monster moves too violently, the "Wasabi Liquid" will begin to flow from its head, eventually covering its entire body and leading to its demise.
The fifth installment, "Sushi Monster SUSHI-L.A. Real Sushi Size Figure Collection 5: Happy Smile & Deep Sadness," continues the features seen in the fourth series, including glow-in-the-dark paintwork and two distinct expressions: extreme joy and profound sadness. Each figure stands approximately 7 cm tall, maintaining a 1/1 scale to real sushi. The collection includes HAPPY SMILE variants: Fresh Tuna, Golden Egg, Blackthroat Seaperch, and Poison Octopus; and DEEP SADNESS variants: Botan Shrimp, Golden Egg, Blackthroat Seaperch, and Poison Octopus. The glow-in-the-dark secret editions feature Tuna and Shrimp versions. With their realistic sculpting and vibrant paint applications, these figures look so good you almost want to eat them!
