To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series, Japanese toy company Takara Tomy has announced Dragon Quest Jinsei Game, a new board game that brings classic RPG adventuring to the long-running Jinsei Game—the Japanese edition of The Game of Life—for the first time. Players take on the role of adventurers, recruiting allies from different vocations while collecting items and gold before facing the archfiend Zoma at the end of their journey and attempting to become a “legendary Hero.” Designed for two to six players, the game is priced at 7,150 yen including tax. Preorders opened on August 17, 2026, ahead of its scheduled release on October 24, 2026.

Even Jinsei Game’s signature car-shaped playing pieces have been redesigned to suit the world of Dragon Quest, becoming horse-drawn wagons. Players begin by inserting their adventurer peg into a wagon and can encounter allies from a variety of vocations along the way, including Warriors, Priests, Mages, and Gadabouts. Each new ally is represented by a color-coded party-member peg that can be added to the wagon. By meeting certain conditions during the adventure, characters can also change vocations and become Sages or Heroes, opening up more possibilities when assembling a party.

The board is packed with familiar RPG elements from throughout the series. Players may encounter iconic monsters such as Slimes while traveling, as well as earn Mini Medals and various item cards. Collecting enough Mini Medals allows them to be exchanged for item cards. Some spaces also produce beneficial or harmful effects depending on whether a particular ally is present in the party, making party composition a factor that can directly influence how the adventure unfolds.

Before reaching the end of the journey, players must confront Zoma, the legendary archfiend from Dragon Quest III, in a final battle decided using the spinner. From recruiting allies and changing vocations to collecting Mini Medals and item cards before challenging the ultimate villain, Dragon Quest Jinsei Game transforms the life-event-driven structure of the original board game into a full-fledged adventure steeped in the world of Dragon Quest.
