BRUCE CAMPBELL BLASTS RECENT 'EVIL DEAD' SEQUELS FOR LACK OF HUMOR: 'IT WON'T KILL YOU TO BE FUNNY!'

Following its recent resurgence, the veteran horror franchise "Evil Dead" has seen the release of three recent sequel films: the 2013 soft reboot "Evil Dead," "Evil Dead Rise," and "Evil Dead: Burn." Each of these three installments brought in different new-generation directors, infusing fresh life into the series. However, they all share a common trait: they largely abandoned the extensive slapstick humor of the second and third original films, becoming noticeably more serious.

Bruce Campbell, who famously starred as the male lead in the first three original films, has taken notice of this trend. In a recent interview with Men's Journal, he stated, "I'd like to see more humor return. These three films have almost no humor, and personally, I don't like that. There's no need to be so grim; horror films don't have to be grim. A little more humor won't kill you."

Beyond the lack of humor, Campbell also voiced other complaints. "You also need to create protagonists that people can truly root for," he explained. "My Ash was a goofball, but you still wanted him to survive. Plus, modern filmmakers always like to make the film's color palette look like a David Fincher movie, like a hospital room, you know what I mean? It's all gray-green, like the lighting you'd find in a garage. Okay, maybe that's an aesthetic choice, but it would never be my choice. I believe even horror films can be beautifully shot. Why not mislead the audience a bit, and then let them feel it for themselves?"

Despite Campbell's grievances with these three installments, he remains a co-producer on what are considered the fourth, fifth, and sixth films in the broader franchise. He has also made cameo appearances through on-screen roles, voice work, or photographs in these entries, indicating his continued support.

The series is confirmed to release its seventh installment, "Evil Dead: Wrath," in 2028. The director has changed to Francis Galluppi, known for "The Last Stop in Yuma County." Campbell continues to serve as a producer, and in that capacity, he confidently teased: "'Evil Dead: Wrath' is going to be great because I've seen that director's first film, 'The Last Stop in Yuma County,' and it's really cool, very smart, and well-conceived. That alone is half the battle won; you think, 'Great, we've found a creative mind.'"
