"Spider-Man: Brand New Day": Test Audiences Rejected Hulk's Early KO, Forced Major Reshoot That Rewrote Character's Fate

Following the release of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," the film's battle between Spider-Man and a Jean Grey-controlled Hulk became a major talking point. Now, James Unsworth, the stunt performer who doubled for the Hulk in the scene, has revealed that the sequence originally had a completely different ending.

According to an interview with "Scene Wire" that has since been deleted, Unsworth stated that the production team filmed several versions of the fight. In one iteration, Spider-Man utilized the Shocker's gauntlets to deliver a powerful blow, knocking out the Hulk. However, test audiences reportedly rejected this outcome, feeling that the Hulk was defeated too easily and that it undermined the character's inherent sense of power.

"We actually did a few different versions," Unsworth explained. "In some versions, Spider-Man basically used a pair of Shocker gauntlets, like a Superman punch, and knocked him out. From what I understand, the test audiences didn't accept that version; they felt Hulk was knocked out too easily. So we went back to the studio and reshot the ending, changing it so he was thrown into a building, essentially stopping the attack."

The official theatrical cut thus saw the Hulk not completely defeated by Spider-Man, but rather breaking free from Jean's mental control through an act of self-sacrifice, thereby preventing further attacks. While seemingly a minor adjustment, this change provided a more compelling exit for the Hulk and preserved the character's gravitas for the subsequent "Avengers: Doomsday."
