Across all currently released "Star Wars" works, "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" depicts the furthest point in the timeline. While Lucasfilm has since released numerous "Star Wars" spin-offs, their timelines are all set before "The Rise of Skywalker," leaving the galaxy's state after the First Order's collapse largely unexplored.

However, this is about to change. The upcoming spin-off film, "Star Wars: Starfighter," slated for release on May 28, 2027, will be the first movie set after the events of "The Rise of Skywalker." Director Shawn Levy recently discussed the galactic situation post-"The Rise of Skywalker" during interviews with ticketing site Fandango and morning show "Good Morning America."

Levy explained that the story takes place five years after "The Rise of Skywalker," a period previously uncharted in the "Star Wars" saga, making it exciting to explore the galaxy's future through this narrative. He described the characters as struggling to make a living in a chaotic, unexplored galaxy.

Levy also noted that the galaxy currently lacks a unified governing body. "At this point, the galaxy isn't governed by any ruler or order, so everyone is just trying to get by," he stated. Ryan Gosling's character, Kade Auberon, hails from "the wrong side of the galaxy," a cynical rogue who grew up in a working-class environment without privilege.

"Starfighter" was penned by Jonathan Tropper, who previously collaborated with Levy on "This Is Where I Leave You" and "The Adam Project." Rumors suggest this film will have a smaller scale and budget compared to typical "Star Wars" movies. It is reportedly about Gosling's character, a Jedi, who aims to train his 15-year-old nephew, with the two being pursued by a pair of villains during their mission.

The star-studded cast includes Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, rising young actor Flynn Gray, and Aaron Pierre, known for his role as the DC Universe's new Green Lantern John Stewart.
