BANDAI SPIRITS’ BANDAI HOBBY model-kit brand has announced the latest release in its RG（Real Grade） Gunpla line, which incorporates detailed armor, internal frames, linked armor mechanisms, and new technology into the 1/144 scale. Based on Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, the new「RG 1/144 Gundam Ground Type」 is scheduled for release in February 2027.
RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type is a ground-combat mobile suit produced using non-standard surplus parts from the RX-78 series. Although it was developed as an emergency mass-production model, its performance still surpasses that of the GM. Its armor uses the same Luna Titanium Alloy as the RX-78-2 Gundam, while its power output is also comparable, giving it nearly equal performance in ground combat. Many of its parts are also shared with the GM Ground Type, allowing units to be maintained and repaired in changing battlefield conditions. The series depicts variants such as a Ground Type Gundam fitted with a repaired GM head and the heavily modified Gundam Ez8, while the machine can also share a wide range of weapons.
「RG 1/144 Gundam Ground Type」 follows the design direction established by the “RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0,” using BANDAI’s latest technology to recreate its armor. The injection-molded parts feature an exceptionally high level of detail, while precise part separation and color separation give each section distinct colors and added depth. The strength and stability of the articulation frame also appear to have evolved beyond the original Gundam, allowing the model to hold a convincing kneeling pose while carrying the weapon container on its back.
The accessories include a disassemblable 100mm machine gun, 180mm cannon, shield, and other weapons. The weapon container faithfully reproduces the storage function seen in the series, while sliding a side panel causes the weapon-loaded platform to extend outward. The presentation also revealed a rock part with two grooves; combined with the shield and 180mm cannon, it can recreate the iconic firing scene from the anime’s opening sequence.
