BANDAI SPIRITS' BANDAI HOBBY division, known for its 1/144 scale Gunpla line, the "RG (Real Grade)" series—which integrates exterior armor, inner frames, interlocking armor, and new technologies—has officially announced details for its latest release from "Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team": the "Gundam Ground Type." This product is slated for a February 2027 release.
The RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type is a terrestrial Mobile Suit constructed from non-standard surplus parts of the RX-78 series. Though an emergency mass-produced model, its performance still surpassed that of the GM. Its exterior armor utilizes the same Luna Titanium alloy as the RX-78-2 Gundam, and its power unit boasts equivalent output, making its terrestrial combat performance nearly identical. The Gundam Ground Type also benefits from a high degree of parts commonality with the GM Ground Type. In the series, variations such as a Gundam Ground Type with a GM head and the heavily modified Gundam Ez8 appeared, showcasing its adaptability for rapid maintenance and repairs on diverse battlefields, ensuring sustained combat readiness and shared access to a wide array of weaponry.
After years of anticipation, the "RG 1/144 Gundam Ground Type" arrives with completely new parts, meticulously recreating the main unit and its extensive weapon accessories. Its inner frame and armor structure inherit the design philosophy of the "RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0," abandoning the single-piece 'Advanced MS Joint' in favor of a more reliable, assemble-type articulated inner frame that offers superior poseability, stability, and aesthetic appeal. By integrating internal frame parts through hollowed-out openings in the exterior armor, this design not only saves space typically occupied by traditional peg-and-hole connections, preventing armor parts from easily detaching, but also adds intricate detail to the armor's surface.
The kit precisely recreates the Gundam Ground Type's practical armor design, featuring multiple opening and closing gimmicks on parts such as the chest, vulcan cannons, cockpit, and leg beam saber storage compartments. Builders can choose between yellow or white parts for the head antenna. Included are the signature "Realistic Decals" characteristic of the RG series, featuring metallic-textured stickers, various fuselage markings, and text, which significantly enhance the model's detail density and realism.
The armament includes a 100mm Machine Gun, 180mm Cannon, Shield, Rocket Launcher, Beam Rifle, Beam Sabers, and the Weapon Container, along with a shield base part to recreate the iconic shooting scene from the anime's opening sequence. The Weapon Container not only faithfully reproduces its deployment and storage on the back, accommodating disassembled 100mm Machine Guns and 180mm Cannons, but also features a locking mechanism for its opening and closing hatches, and an interlocking gimmick that slides out the internal tray when the side panels are opened.
