After keeping moviegoers waiting for 16 years, the sequel to The Social Network, titled The Social Reckoning, is set to arrive in theaters in just over a month. This morning, the film unexpectedly released its second trailer, offering a closer look at several new scenes.
The sequel is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, who previously wrote the screenplay for the original film. David Fincher, who directed the first installment, is not returning. The cast includes Mikey Madison, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr and Wunmi Mosaku. Jeremy Strong, best known for his Emmy-winning performance in Succession, takes over the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg, who played the character in the original film.

The Social Reckoning focuses on journalist Jeff Horwitz’s work on “The Facebook Files,” the series of reports he wrote for The Wall Street Journal in 2021 that exposed the secrets behind Facebook. Jeremy Allen White plays Horwitz, while Madison portrays Frances Haugen, the data engineer who leaked information to him. The film is scheduled to open in North America on October 9 and in Taiwan on October 8. Although it can be classified as a sequel, distributor Sony Pictures has described it in its promotional copy as a “companion piece.”
