After rumors circulated since 2024, Paramount Skydance has finally made an official announcement regarding the sequel to Tom Cruise's 1990 racing film, "Days of Thunder".

Cruise, who stars in the film, posted the first promotional image and video (below) on his social media accounts today, making the surprise announcement that Anne Hathaway will join as the new female lead. She takes over from Nicole Kidman, who played Cruise's on-screen ex-wife in the original film. The promotional video was filmed at a NASCAR track. The sequel is slated for a June 2, 2028 release, though a production start date has not yet been set. In the video, a pregnant Hathaway lightheartedly quipped that filming would have to wait until after her baby is born.

Jonathan Levine, known for directing "Warm Bodies," "Long Shot," and "Novocaine," has been confirmed to take the helm, succeeding the late action maestro Tony Scott, who directed the original. The screenplay will be penned by Will Staples, co-writer of "Tom Clancy's Without Remorse". While specific plot details remain under wraps, it has been revealed that Hathaway will portray a race team owner and engineer.

Much like the "Top Gun" sequel released four years ago, "Days of Thunder" is another Paramount Skydance production that Cruise and Scott collaborated on, both originally produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. For this new installment, Bruckheimer will return to produce alongside Cruise.
