The latest North American box office figures are in, and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" continues its undisputed reign, clinching the top spot for a fifth consecutive week with an additional $22.2 million. The film's North American total now stands at an impressive $891 million. Should its momentum carry it past $936 million, "Brand New Day" will officially dethrone "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" as the highest-grossing film in North American history, setting its sights on becoming the first movie to cross the $1 billion mark domestically.

Globally, "Brand New Day" has amassed $2.332 billion, putting it on the cusp of surpassing "Avatar: The Way of Water"'s $2.334 billion worldwide gross to become the third highest-grossing film of all time. With less than $2 million separating the two blockbusters, "Brand New Day" is poised to overtake it at any moment.
However, new releases paint a starkly different picture, with Ridley Scott's post-apocalyptic thriller "The Dog Stars" suffering a catastrophic opening. Plagued by numerous negative reviews, the film managed a dismal opening weekend of only around $8 million domestically. This meager sum stands in stark contrast to its production budget, estimated between $70 million and $110 million, indicating the film is headed for substantial financial losses. Scott's recent filmography has seen a string of underperformers, including "The Last Duel," "Napoleon," and "Gladiator II," none of which managed to break even at the box office. Among these, only "The Last Duel" garnered some critical acclaim, offering a slight reprieve from its commercial struggles.
