"GTA 6" Cut "Fridge Stocking" System for Being Too Realistic, But Vehicle Fueling, Charging, and Repair Mechanisms Remain Confirmed

Rockstar Games continues to unveil more gameplay details for "Grand Theft Auto VI". Among these revelations, a life system that had already entered the development phase was ultimately removed for being "too realistic."

Rob Nelson, Co-Studio Head of Rockstar North, disclosed in an interview with Famitsu that the team had initially designed a system allowing protagonists Jason and Lucia to visit stores, purchase groceries and food, and then return home to restock their refrigerators. The stores even had corresponding product specifications, and fridge contents would replenish as players made purchases.

However, Nelson explained that this design eventually made the overall game mechanics overly complex. Consequently, the team opted to simplify it, aiming for a more appropriate balance between "realism and playability."

"During development, we experimented with a system where players could buy groceries and restock their fridge. We even designed food items for stores that could be purchased and brought home, with the fridge contents replenishing accordingly. However, this made the overall mechanics much more complex, so we ultimately had to simplify it," he stated.

This mechanism was also potentially linked to a character physique system, as players in "GTA 6" will experience weight changes based on their food intake and can visit gyms to build muscle, with their body type even influencing stamina performance.

▌Vehicles Still Require Fueling and Charging

Conversely, the "vehicle fuel" system, which also emphasizes realism, is confirmed to be retained. YouTuber TGG, who attended a preview at Rockstar, reported that players driving gasoline-powered vehicles will need to visit gas stations to refuel, while electric vehicles will require charging. This entire process is expected to take approximately 10 seconds, accompanied by dedicated animations, and gas stations will also offer vehicle repair services.

Rockstar is aware that this mechanism might elicit mixed reactions from players but has decided to include it in the final version. This implies that before undertaking missions such as heists, players may need to check their vehicle's fuel level, in addition to preparing weapons and escape routes, to avoid running out of gas during a getaway.

In contrast, vehicles in "GTA 5" had infinite fuel by default. "GTA 6" further integrates everyday life details into its criminal gameplay, though Rockstar is clearly still making trade-offs between realism and potential tediousness.
