Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock reunite 28 years after the original Practical Magic in Practical Magic 2, which opens in North American theaters on September 11. Members of the U.S. and U.K. press who attended advance screenings have begun sharing brief first reactions on social media, and the overall response currently leans mixed to negative. One clarification: the first embedded post below, by Marc Zammit, discusses his rewatch of the 1998 original amid the sequel’s release hype rather than an advance screening of Practical Magic 2.

Practical Magic 2 is directed by Susanne Bier, who previously worked with Bullock on the apocalyptic thriller Bird Box. Returning Practical Magic co-writer Akiva Goldsman wrote the screenplay with Georgia Pritchett and Kelly Marcel. The story is primarily adapted from The Book of Magic, the fourth novel in the original book series.

The returning cast also includes two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest and Tony Award winner Stockard Channing. New additions include Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Joey King, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod.

Official synopsis: The sequel takes audiences back to a world filled with playful wonder and powerful ancestral magic, as the Owens sisters face a dark curse that could destroy their family once and for all. It is a must-see cinematic event packed with fun, magic and mayhem.
