Insomniac Games is set to release its PS5 exclusive, Marvel’s Wolverine, on September 15, 2026. However, the game’s recently released trailer has unexpectedly sparked debate over a character’s identity. Because a villain wielding a purple energy sword appears in the footage, many players initially assumed that she was Psylocke, an X-Men member, prompting the developer to step in and clarify the situation.

Insomniac later directly identified the sword-wielding character in a social media post as Lady Deathstrike rather than Psylocke. Although the developer never explicitly said that the post was made in response to the fan debate, many fans in the comments expressed surprise that the distinction needed to be explained at all.
The confusion mainly stemmed from the purple energy sword in the character’s hand, since energy weapons have long been one of Psylocke’s signature abilities. However, her hairstyle and costume are actually closer to Lady Deathstrike’s design, and the character had already appeared several times in the game’s promotional material.
The “Ain’t No Hero” trailer, released in July 2026, already showcased Lady Deathstrike’s new look. Insomniac later released a GIF showing her looking down toward the camera. An even clearer clue is that she repeatedly attacks Logan with the trademark finger claws associated with Lady Deathstrike, a fighting style that is clearly different from Psylocke’s.
It remains unclear why Lady Deathstrike is wielding the purple energy sword or where the weapon came from. Meanwhile, X-Men-related characters such as Jean Grey and Sabretooth have already been confirmed to appear, but Insomniac has yet to announce Psylocke’s involvement in the game.

Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to launch on PS5 on September 15, 2026.
