Japanese prize figure manufacturer PARADE (株式会社パレード) has announced a new line of "Kelp-Bound Plush Shoulder Bags" based on the animated film "Chiikawa The Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island". These adorable prize items feature five characters: Hachiware, Usagi, Momonga, Furuhon-ya, and Kawauso. Each bag measures approximately 23-25 cm tall, depending on the character, and is slated to appear in crane games across Japan starting mid-September 2026.
These prize bags are inspired by a memorable scene from the movie where the characters are captured and entangled in kelp. While "Konbu-jime" (昆布締め) traditionally refers to a Japanese culinary technique of curing food with kelp, here it humorously depicts the characters in a rather helpless state, tightly bound by the seaweed. This clever twist adds a touch of absurd cuteness to what was originally a perilous situation.
Each item transforms the beloved characters into functional plush shoulder bags. The bags feature a zippered compartment for storage and come with a shoulder strap designed to resemble a long strip of kelp. Wearing one makes it look as if you're carrying around a character freshly caught and bound by kelp. Hachiware's helpless expression, with ears drooping, perfectly captures the character's distressed look from the movie.
