Following the release of Insomniac Games' "Marvel's Wolverine," the game's portrayal of Mystique, Raven Darkhölme, marrying the female character Tyger Tiger has drawn criticism from some players, who accuse the development team of "converting her to homosexuality." However, a look at MARVEL's long-standing comic book lore reveals this claim is inaccurate.
According to official PlayStation character descriptions, the game's version of Mystique balances her time between her wife, Tyger Tiger, and her espionage work, confirming their marital status in the title. However, Mystique's relationships with women are not a new addition by Insomniac.
In the main MARVEL comic universe, Earth-616, Mystique and Irene Adler, also known as Destiny, have long been established as partners. MARVEL officially describes their bond as a "centuries-spanning romance," explicitly referring to Destiny as Mystique's wife. The two also co-parented Rogue in the past.
This relationship dates back to Chris Claremont's "X-Men" #141, "Days of Future Past," in 1981. While their affection was initially depicted through subtext due to comic censorship and publishing constraints at the time, their first on-panel kiss didn't occur until 2019 in "History of the Marvel Universe" #2.
This relationship was further cemented within the X-Men's core family lore in the later "X-Men Blue: Origins" #1 in 2023. The comic revealed that Nightcrawler's true biological parents are, in fact, Mystique and Destiny: Mystique used her shapeshifting abilities to alter her physiology, allowing Destiny to conceive and give birth to Nightcrawler. Azazel, previously believed to be his father, is no longer considered his true biological parent. 
Furthermore, Mystique has also had romantic relationships with male characters in the past, such as Wolverine and Sabretooth. Therefore, a more accurate understanding is that she has long been portrayed as establishing intimate relationships with characters of various genders. The real change in "Marvel's Wolverine" is the shift in her spouse from Destiny to Tyger Tiger, rather than a sudden introduction of a preference for women.
