NetherRealm Studios' next project remains officially unannounced, but industry speculation widely points to it being "Injustice 3," the highly anticipated sequel to their DC Comics fighting game. Now, fresh clues have emerged, suggesting an unannounced AAA 2D fighting game is currently undergoing secret testing in California.
Game testing company Good Gamer Group recently posted a recruitment advertisement for a mysterious project, describing it as an "AAA fighting game" and a "large 2D fighting game." Although the post was later deleted, it was discovered by EventHubs. Further fueling speculation, the testing location is Culver City, California, which also houses the headquarters of NetherRealm's parent company, Warner Bros. Games.
Moreover, NetherRealm studio head Ed Boon stated in May 2026 that in addition to "actively pushing the next 'Mortal Kombat'," the team "definitely has other projects underway." The studio has also frequently recruited QA testers and game designers this year.
In fact, numerous hints about "Injustice 3" have surfaced previously. In 2025, two voice actors for characters in the first two installments reportedly mentioned their return for the third game, sparking discussion despite later retractions. This April, "Injustice 3" content also briefly appeared on the online resume of a Warner Bros. Games artist.
Considering the timeline, if NetherRealm maintains its roughly four-year development cycle from "Mortal Kombat 11" to "Mortal Kombat 1," then a 2027 release for "Injustice 3" would be quite reasonable.
