Kane Parsons, creator of "The Backrooms" and film director, recently made a second visit to Valve's headquarters, sharing office photos on his Instagram Stories. This immediately sparked speculation among players that he might be discussing a "Portal" film adaptation with Valve.
The 20-year-old Parsons gained significant attention this year with his feature film debut, "The Backrooms." Produced on a budget of approximately $10 million, the movie grossed over $393 million worldwide and even earned public praise from Hideo Kojima. Notably, this isn't his first time at Valve; he previously visited the headquarters and shared photos in June 2026.
The rumors gained traction partly due to Parsons' personal affection for "Portal." In a May 2026 interview with The New York Times, he admitted that bringing "Portal" to the big screen was his "dream project," stating that the game has long influenced his creative work. He also nearly confessed in a past IGN interview to secretly incorporating "Half-Life" sound effects into "The Backrooms."
However, a "Portal" movie was first announced in 2013, with J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company attached to the project. At the time, a "Half-Life" film was also rumored. Abrams stated in 2021 that "Portal" was still in development at Warner Bros., but there has been no new progress for several years since.
Consequently, Parsons' recent second visit to Valve has led many players to hope that the company might be considering a different collaborator. As of now, neither Valve nor Parsons has announced any "Portal" film-related plans, and everything remains in the realm of fan speculation.
