With "Grand Theft Auto VI" slated for a November 19, 2026 release, other game companies have been steering clear of the same launch window. Now, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy believes this is a sensible decision, even predicting that the true peak in traffic might not arrive until "Grand Theft Auto VI's" multiplayer mode launches in 2027.
Speaking with Bloomberg, Clancy revealed that Twitch has already discussed future plans with Rockstar Games, including strategies to engage platform creators with the "Grand Theft Auto VI" hype.
“We’ve spent a lot of time talking to Rockstar about their plans and helping them think about how to engage our creators,” he stated. “You’ll see a huge bump when "Grand Theft Auto VI" comes out, but when they launch multiplayer next year, that’s going to be an even bigger bump.”
Notably, Rockstar has yet to officially announce the name or release date for "Grand Theft Auto VI's" multiplayer mode, nor has it confirmed whether the widely rumored "GTA Online 2" will indeed be its official title. However, Clancy's comments strongly suggest that the multiplayer content is likely slated for a 2027 release.
Regarding whether the new multiplayer mode will render the existing "Grand Theft Auto Online" obsolete, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously hinted that this might not be the case. Citing the "NBA 2K Online" series as an example, he commented:
“Generally speaking, as long as consumers are still engaged in these works, we will continue to support them,” he further emphasized. “We’ve proven that we are willing to continue to support older works as long as the community wants to continue to engage.”
This implies that even if "GTA Online 2" officially launches in the future, Rockstar could still maintain operations for the current "Grand Theft Auto Online," provided it retains a sufficient player base. Given that "Grand Theft Auto VI's" initial release is exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version date announced yet, the older "Grand Theft Auto Online" may continue to play a significant role in the short term.
