Netflix's highly anticipated reboot of "The Chronicles of Narnia" has unveiled the first look at its pivotal character, Aslan, for the inaugural film, "The Magician's Nephew." The iconic lion's new design graces the cover of the latest issue of renowned British film magazine Empire, as seen below.
In a significant departure from previous portrayals, Aslan will be voiced by two-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep. Greta Gerwig, who is writing and directing the film after her acclaimed work on "Barbie," explained her casting choice in an exclusive interview with Empire. Gerwig stated her desire for an actor who could embody depth, sincerity, and dignity without being somber or arrogant. She sought someone capable of conveying profound emotion and compassion, alongside joy and immense love. Furthermore, Gerwig specifically looked for an actor over seventy, believing such an individual would possess both the wisdom of extensive life experience and a childlike wonder. She concluded that few actors could meet these stringent criteria, especially among the greatest of all time.
Gerwig also revealed that this iteration of Aslan features heterochromia and distinctive red facial stripes, a direct homage to one of her key inspirations, David Bowie.
In addition to Streep, the cast includes David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Ciarán Hinds, Carey Mulligan, Susan Wokoma, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, and Denise Gough. Previously announced cast members include Emma Mackey as the White Witch and Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew.
"The Magician's Nephew" is slated for a theatrical release on February 12, 2027, with an IMAX premiere two days earlier on February 10, 2027. It will then debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
