CAPCOM's Resident Evil video game franchise is back on the big screen with another reboot, "Resident Evil: Outbreak Night," which rolled out across multiple markets last week and quickly delivered impressive box office numbers. The film opened to $108.3 million worldwide, scoring the biggest global debut in franchise history. It even surpassed the original 2002 "Resident Evil" movie's entire $102 million worldwide run.

In North America alone, "Outbreak Night" earned $60 million, easily beating initial industry projections in the $40 million-to-$50 million range. The result also set a new domestic opening record for the Resident Evil franchise and nearly outgrossed the entire North American run of every previous installment. It fell just short of "Resident Evil: Afterlife," which finished with $60.1 million domestically. Beyond its box office success, "Outbreak Night" has also drawn strong reviews and enthusiastic reactions, with many hailing it as the best video game movie ever made. By any measure, the reboot is a resounding success.
