A bizarre bathroom sign in Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine recently led players to question whether the studio had used generative AI to create in-game assets. After screenshots circulated on social media, Insomniac community director James Stevenson quickly responded, insisting the image was not AI-generated but simply the result of a UV mapping error.
Stevenson addressed the claim on X, formerly Twitter:
The explanation still left some players puzzled. Several questioned how UV mapping on a flat sign could produce such an unusual visual glitch. Others joked that they would have simply blamed AI, while one user shared a replacement bathroom icon they said took just 10 minutes to create.
The controversy is not the only technical issue to emerge since Marvel's Wolverine launched. Under certain circumstances, the game's "scent trail" and "audio awareness" prompts may also cause crashes.
Stevenson explained that those features interact with other in-game systems. With a large number of players currently in the game, the team must carefully test each fix to avoid introducing new problems while addressing existing bugs.
The use of generative AI in game development has become an increasingly contentious industry issue. Level-5 recently apologized for featuring generative AI material in a presentation, while major publishers including KRAFTON, Square Enix and Electronic Arts have also invested in the technology.
