Tom Cruise and "The Revenant" Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu have teamed up for the big-budget apocalyptic comedy "The Digger," which opens Oct. 2. Warner Bros. lifted the social-media embargo on Sept. 22, allowing critics who attended advance screenings to share their first reactions. Most of the early responses were far from glowing. Even before the embargo lifted, industry chatter suggested Cruise had already fallen out of this season's Best Actor race, dimming his chances of finally winning an Oscar.

Plot synopsis: The world's most powerful man sets off on a frantic journey to prove he can save humanity before the catastrophe he unleashed destroys everything. Iñárritu co-wrote the screenplay with Mexican writer Sabina Berman and "Birdman" screenwriters Nicolás Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris. The film opens across North America on Oct. 2.
