Zach Cregger's "Resident Evil: Outbreak Night" has earned largely positive reviews since hitting theaters, but its tragic final act has sparked a heated debate among fans.
The story follows Bryan, a medical courier assigned to deliver a mysterious package to Raccoon City General Hospital. After an infected victim bites him along the way, the t-Virus gradually transforms him into a Nemesis-like monster. Although Bryan remains largely conscious and knows he needs the antidote, he loses control and kills every scientist capable of saving him. The syringe containing the cure then plummets 28 stories, seemingly destroying his last chance of survival.
Some viewers were furious that Bryan endured an entire movie's worth of suffering only to receive no payoff. One fan said they loved everything leading up to the finale, only for the movie to slip on a banana peel at the finish line. Others argued that the first half delivered excellent horror before an absurd, rushed conclusion dragged the film down.
Another group of fans, however, believes that cruelty is exactly the point. They argue that Bryan was essentially an NPC in the world of "Resident Evil," not a hero like Leon or Claire. From that perspective, the movie is really the origin story of a B.O.W., while the voice message Bryan leaves for his girlfriend resembles the kind of background recording players might discover while exploring the games.
Austin Abrams, who stars as Bryan, also found the ending wild and shocking when he first read it. Still, he appreciated the choice, arguing that modern movies are often too afraid to truly kill off characters audiences have grown to love.
Cregger previously revealed that the theatrical cut does not feature the movie's original ending. Instead, the filmmakers ultimately chose an alternate version during post-production.
