P. L. Travers’ fantasy novel series "Mary Poppins" is an undisputed literary classic. Its cultural impact was so profound that its magical nanny became the defining image of the character archetype. Yet despite the books’ enduring fame, their major screen legacy has largely been limited to two Disney movies: "Mary Poppins" and its sequel, "Mary Poppins Returns."

That long-standing Disney lock on the property is now set to change. Tom Winchester, a producer on "Shōgun," has secured adaptation rights to "Mary Poppins" and is developing a television series with British production company Pure Fiction Television. Unlike Disney’s warm and cheerful take, the new adaptation will lean further into the novels’ more mysterious, mercurial and dangerous version of Mary Poppins, along with some of the books’ genuinely frightening storylines.
Disney is not currently involved in the series. However, Deadline suggested that Pure Fiction could seek a partnership with the company, given the enormous recognition of Disney’s "Mary Poppins," to help raise the new show’s profile. No agreement has been finalized.
