At the "Mega Hobby EXPO 2026" event on September 26, Japanese collectible maker MegaHouse announced that it is developing a major new project for the 35th anniversary of "Future GPX Cyber Formula": the "Masaharu Kawamori-Designed Transformable Asurada (Tentative)". Kawamori’s original design sheets were also displayed at the show.
In the original series, the Asurada machines designed by Masaharu Kawamori include the Asurada GSX, Super Asurada 01, Super Asurada AKF-11, and other race cars equipped with the Asurada supercomputer-based AI driving support system. The system recognized protagonist Hayato Kazami as its sole driver. As Hayato’s skills matured and his support team developed new components, each successive Asurada became faster and more advanced. The machines could instantly alter their body configurations and functions to suit different track conditions, but they always retained the basic silhouette of a race car.
Kawamori’s newly designed "Transformable Asurada (Tentative)" takes an all-terrain approach, resulting in a radically different machine from any previous Asurada. Its signature transformation system supports three terrain-specific configurations, including Circuit Mode. Even more surprisingly, it can transform from a race car into a humanoid robot, much like the Variable Fighters from "Macross"—putting Kawamori’s design expertise on full display. The concept’s departure from the original series may not appeal to every fan, but in an era with fewer new transforming-robot anime, the gimmick feels like a wonderfully romantic love letter to the genre.
