Nearly two years ago, "Deadline" reported that Lucasfilm had tapped "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" director Simon Kinberg to write and produce a new "Star Wars" trilogy. Now, noted industry insider Daniel Richtman reports that Jon Watts, who directed all three films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Spider-Man" trilogy, has been tapped to helm the first installment.

Neither Watts nor Kinberg is a newcomer to the "Star Wars" universe. Watts previously served as co-creator and showrunner of "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew," while Kinberg co-created the animated series "Star Wars Rebels" and worked as a creative consultant on "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
Plot details for the trilogy remain completely under wraps, but Lucasfilm appears poised to position the films as Episodes X through XII of the mainline saga. The studio also seems to be moving away from its approach to Episodes VII through IX, rather than handing each installment to a different creative team in a relay-style production process. At the very least, the screenplays are expected to remain under a single creative lead to ensure a more cohesive story. The shift may be intended to avoid a repeat of the sequel trilogy's uneven handoffs, when competing visions between directors created friction in how the characters, storylines and central themes evolved from one film to the next.
