The new extended edition of "Avengers: Endgame," titled "Avengers: Endgame Encore," hit theaters worldwide last week and immediately set another record. The rerelease delivered a massive $86 million global opening weekend, easily topping both the domestic and worldwide box office charts. That total included $26 million from North America and another $60 million from international markets.

While Marvel Studios had plenty to celebrate, the outlook was far less encouraging for DreamWorks. Its new original animated feature "Forgotten Island" earned glowing reviews but stumbled at the box office, opening to just $20.6 million worldwide, including $12.8 million in North America. With a reported production budget of $80 million before marketing costs, the film may struggle just to break even.
Other new releases that fell short of Marvel’s heroes still posted healthier results. "Primetime," starring Robert Pattinson, opened with $19.2 million, marking A24’s third-biggest debut to date. With a production budget of only $15 million, the film should have little trouble turning a profit. Meanwhile, "Resident Evil" took second place at the domestic box office in its sophomore weekend with $23.3 million, pushing its worldwide total to a solid $196 million.
