The Russo Brothers recently revealed that "Avengers: Endgame" nearly showed Steve Rogers’ entire journey to return the Infinity Stones. The filmmakers even considered presenting Captain America’s mission as a montage, but ultimately scrapped the idea because the story became too complicated.
At the end of the film, Steve completes his mission but does not return to the present. Instead, he remains in the past and spends his life with Peggy Carter, leaving fans to debate for years over what happened while he was returning the Stones.
“We did have that conversation. There might have even been… I think we toyed around with an idea of like, ‘Is there a montage where he puts the Stones back?’” Joe Russo told CBR.
“We felt like it just played past the ending. We were like, ‘It seems much more complicated than a montage could sustain.’ And so we didn’t do it.”
“We did circle that idea for a long time,” Anthony Russo added. When CBR suggested that the storyline could become a standalone project starring a returning Chris Evans, Joe jokingly replied, “I think that’s a great idea. How about a movie?”
Previous reports have suggested that Steve’s mission to return the Stones could become a Disney+ series. Whether that project moves forward, however, may depend on Evans’ willingness to continue playing Steve after "Avengers: Secret Wars," as well as who assumes the Captain America mantle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next phase. "Avengers: Doomsday" is also expected to explore the consequences of Steve’s decision to remain in the past.
