Fresh off the hit franchise reboot "Resident Evil," which has pushed his career to new heights, "Weapons" filmmaker Zach Cregger has been developing his next original sci-fi feature, "The Flood," since last year. The project has now found its star in Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, marking her first major studio blockbuster in seven years, since "X-Men: Dark Phoenix."

Written and directed by Cregger, with Steven Spielberg producing, the film is set to hit theaters Aug. 11, 2028.

Although official plot details remain under wraps, previous reports have claimed that the film follows a deep-space exploration crew aboard a vessel called the Spiritus Mundi, which detects a strange recurring signal from a distant planet. Captain Elena Voss leads the team to investigate, only to discover a bizarre alien artifact that begins warping time, reality and the crew's minds.

Cregger recently said in an interview that "The Flood" shares some similarities with "2001: A Space Odyssey." He stressed that he was not putting "The Flood" on the same level as the landmark masterpiece, but said "2001" has an undeniable strangeness and can also be viewed as a horror film. In his eyes, it is a terrifying exploration of human nature that tackles artificial intelligence and asks profound questions—qualities he believes "The Flood" shares.
