Buying a PS5 Pro in Japan? Prove You Actually Play—Sony Sets 60-Hour Requirement and Lottery System

Sony Interactive Entertainment has rolled out new application rules for its latest batch of PS5 Pro consoles in Japan. Players must register for a chance to buy one—and prove they have actually used a PlayStation console for at least 60 hours over the past two years. If the number of eligible applicants exceeds available inventory, buyers will be chosen through a lottery.

Under Sony’s official rules, applicants must have logged at least 60 hours of gameplay on PS4, PS5 or both between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. That playtime must be tied to the same Sony account used for the application, and the account must be registered in Japan.

Meeting those requirements does not guarantee a purchase. Sony says it will hold a lottery if the number of eligible applicants exceeds the planned supply. Applications opened on September 28 and will close on October 7, 2026.

Sony has not explicitly said the 60-hour requirement is designed to combat scalpers, but its terms warn that applications and orders may be canceled if they are found to be intended for resale. Buyers also cannot change the delivery address or request package forwarding after submitting an order.

This is not the first time Sony has used account activity as a requirement for buying limited-edition hardware. When the PlayStation 5 Pro Console – 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle went on sale in Japan in 2024, applicants were required to have at least 30 hours of recorded playtime on PS4 or PS5.
