Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil: Outbreak Night” Sparks a Gaming Boom — PS5 Sales of “Resident Evil 2” Jump 64%

Zach Cregger’s live-action movie “Resident Evil: Outbreak Night” has not only delivered at the box office, but also fueled a major sales boost for the video games that inspired it.

According to market research firm Alinea Analytics, PS5 sales of “Resident Evil 2” and “Resident Evil 4 Remake” rose 64% and 54%, respectively, during the week following the film’s theatrical debut. Their Steam sales also increased by 11% and 14%.

Revenue on PlayStation climbed even higher, surging 80% for “Resident Evil 2” and 84% for “Resident Evil 4 Remake.” However, analysts noted that CAPCOM launched major franchise-wide discounts roughly 10 days before the movie opened, meaning the gains cannot be attributed entirely to the film. Even so, its release clearly encouraged more players to return to the series.

“Resident Evil 2” saw the biggest jump in daily active users, rising approximately 48% from around 78,000 players to 116,000. With the movie unfolding alongside the events of “Resident Evil 2,” the game benefited more than any other entry in the franchise.

Other titles also enjoyed a resurgence. Active player numbers increased 24% for “Resident Evil 4 Remake,” 25% for “Resident Evil 3,” and 20% for “Resident Evil Requiem.” Cregger’s film has also become the most commercially successful “Resident Evil” movie to date, showing how a hit video game adaptation can send a wave of viewers back to CAPCOM’s original games.
