Rockstar Games has revealed more about the scale of the open world in "Grand Theft Auto VI," confirming that the state of Leonida is roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V's Los Santos and Blaine County combined. It is also the largest game world Rockstar has ever created. Even so, the developers acknowledged that players still will not see the entire map simply by completing the main story.

Speaking with Game Informer, Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut said the GTA 6 map is considerably larger than anything the studio has built before. While the story will naturally lead players through most of its key locations, the team deliberately avoided forcing every corner of the world into the main campaign.
Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries explained that part of the story's job is to guide players across the map in a natural and entertaining way. Although the campaign cannot take them everywhere, the team wants players to explore and experience most of Leonida's regions, cultures, and atmosphere.

The developers also emphasized the importance of making each region feel connected, allowing the entire state of Leonida to function as one cohesive world. Vice City is based on Miami, while Grassrivers draws inspiration from the Florida Everglades. However, some famous real-world attractions, including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and NASA's Space Coast, may not appear in the game.
Florida's distinctive climate will also come to life through an advanced new weather system featuring hurricanes and powerful winds that can directly affect NPC behavior. More than 170 animal species have been confirmed, with some featuring rare legendary variants similar to those found in "Red Dead Redemption 2."
